Back pain is, strange as it may sound, gender-specific. Women complain of back pain more often than men, with differences in the nature of the pain.

In women, tension and discomfort occur mainly in the upper back. In men, the pain usually originates in the lower back in the areas of the sacrum and lumbar spine. What are the causes?

1. The type of work performed: Women work much more in a sitting position, while men often lift and carry heavy loads. Men also tend to overdo it with sports or overexert themselves when working in the house and garden.

2. Lifestyle: Even today, working mothers still do the majority of the housework. The double burden of work and family literally weighs on the upper back.

3. Physical conditions: Women naturally generally have less muscle strength than men. This results in a higher load on the spine, especially during pregnancy.

4. Clothing: High heels have a negative effect on the upper back. Shoulder straps of handbags that run over one shoulder also cause discomfort in the upper back area.

Muscle tension is often the trigger for back pain. Heat can release muscle tension.

So do yourself some good every now and then, treat yourself to a hot bath, or place a hot water bottle on the tense muscle area.
