Would you like to design your workstation in an ergonomic way? Then don't forget the light and its effect!

Office work is strenuous for your eyes. Good and individually adapted lighting can prevent fatigue and improve your own performance. Daylight is generally highly valued.

Researchers from Michigan have discovered that long-term lack of daylight damages the brain.

Viewed the other way around, bright light seems to be beneficial for mental activities and memory performance. You should therefore avoid working for too long in a poorly lit room. Basically, a light intensity of at least 500 Lux is recommended, lighting experts advise 1000 Lux.

In my workstation analyses, I repeatedly find that the incidence of light is often handled in an unfavorable way. The problems that occur are commonplace:

  • too much contrast (for example, the screen is in front of the window)
  • disturbing shadow effects
  • glare reflections on the screen (often caused by windows)
  • flickering light effects

Fortunately, such problems are usually easy to solve.

Make clever use of colors! White room walls and ceilings reflect light and therefore easily provide more light.

The light color temperature – 5300 Kelvin corresponds to "daylight white" – can also often be favorably influenced by the color scheme of the room.

Even the working atmosphere can benefit from the sensible use of light colors.

Optimal lighting consists of a mix of daylight, direct and indirect lighting, and, if necessary, an additional desk lamp.

You can find "daylight lamps" in stores at affordable prices, which can bring the health benefits of the sun back into the office, especially on days with little sun. This prevents a lack of light.
