I used to be a passionate glider pilot; a rather unusual hobby. I still remember well how I had to go through the same checklist again and again before every takeoff. I checked off the same all-too-familiar points every time. But this procedure was crucial to ensure a complication-free flight. For example, it was unthinkable to take off with an incorrectly set altimeter.

Such checklists have become indispensable in aviation, as the safety of the entire flight depends on them. Today, they are used in many workplaces and entire industries. And they are also widely recommended for private use – for example, before starting a journey. Why? What are their advantages?

  • They are very suitable for recurring tasks.
  • They make workflows transparent.
  • They ensure that no work step is overlooked.
  • They reduce the error rate.
  • They support structured working.
  • They serve to save time and thus improve work efficiency.
  • They guarantee a defined quality.
  • They document know-how.
  • They enable certain activities to be carried out by substitutes.
  • They facilitate the onboarding of new employees.
  • They make it easier to carry out tasks that are rarely performed.

From this list, it may become clear: checklists prove useful in many ways. When you pack your suitcase, a checklist reminds you to pack your toothbrush.

When you prepare a work meeting, checklists ensure that your preparations go quickly. Even with important decisions – for example, a major investment – checklists support you in considering and meeting all necessary criteria.

Always keep your checklists up to date. Occasionally, it can be useful to create checklists as videos in combination with screen recordings and spoken text.

Archive checklists in a generally accessible folder, for example on Evernote or OneNote.
